Garden shed IX

Rather surprisingly, Dale said he'd been dreading
getting started on the siding. Huh?
One can really see progress when those boards
start covering the black paper.

Once he got started, he was in git-er-done Dale mode.

Exterior color: "Khaki Green"

Texture on the walls...

Interior paint color: "Taffy pull"

How about the $1.00 switch plate from the RE-Store?
Dale has a sharp eye.

Beams are exposed.

The window trim has been painted/stained.
Flooring has been chosen.
Anyone know how to put tile down?

Garden shed VIII

Comments from my last post have me
looking at this little building a bit differently.
One friend said, "Dale never does anything halfway does he?"
No, he doesn't. He has always done things "right." All the steps taken
in building this were the same steps taken in building a house.
This definitely not a Lowe's/Home Depot shed!

We talked about storing our John Deere riding mower in it,
along with other gardening tools and paraphernalia. Isn't that why
we put in a 5" roll-up door? So the mower would fit inside?
I drove the mower in one day recently. It does fit, but there's
no room left for maneuvering it.
Hmmm....
As time went on and the building was going up,
Dale said he didn't think we'd store the mower in it.
He says he wants a special place for me to "work with my plants,"
to fix up on the inside any way I want.
Huh?
A special place for me? Isn't half the house special enough?
I don't quite understand what he's thinking, but you know what?
I'll go along with him.

Another comment: "It looks more like a chapel than a shed."
Indeed.
So, if this special place that looks like a chapel is my special place,
then my approach to finishing (and using) the interior better be
very well thought out.
A special place that looks like a chapel = sanctuary.
Wow.
How can I honor my husband's efforts and the sense of sanctuary?

Chapel - a private place of worship
Sanctuary - a place for worship; a consecrated place
Consecrate - to set apart

Wasn't that spot in the backyard already "set apart"?
It's the view out my kitchen window, so I've carefully placed what I see.
The coral bark maple and kousa dogwood "cradle" the new building.

It's where the feeders hang and the bird baths are concentrated.
The neighbor's aged cedar fence reminds me of the Dinkel Road's rustic,
country look and helped ease me through the adjustment to "city" living.

Looking north into Canada, I can see the peaks of the Coast Range,
and the North Star hangs over it at night.

Soon, the interior will be ready for me to finish and furnish.
Am I up to this?

To insure that it's well-sealed and we can keep it at a comfortable
temperature year round, insulation and sheetrock were installed.
I had remarked that I liked the "exposed" look of the rafters,
so we bought rough-cut cedar boards to give it that look.

Last of the sheetrock is on the walls.

It looks light and airy, doesn't it?
Dale's nearly finished taping, mudding, and sanding.
Soon paint can go on the walls. I think I've settled on a color...
How does 'parchment' sound?

Garden shed VII

Progress has been steady.
Doors are in and gutters are on.
I had a hard time deciding if the door hardware should be
like the house's (brass) or not.
"Not" won.

The roll-up door was a challenge.

But he got it!

A-1 Gutters came one day when we were at work.
What a nice surprise when I got home.

Frost on the roof; contrail in the morning sky.

I love this window!

Lights were on early this morning.
What's he up to?

Interior work has begun...

Garden shed VI

Last Friday's goal:
put those PABCO Premier shingles on the roof.

Getting started.
He hit his thumb with the waffle-head hammer not once,
not twice, but three times. Ouch!

At the end of the day, roofed and two windows are in!

Putting the cap on the peak. Hammer scored one more.

Ready for the arched window.

Little shed's looking nice.

Next: doors...

Garden shed V

At last, my opportunity to contribute to the cause:
facial and trim boards need to be painted.
Soldier on, Kim.

Friday morning before heading to work I took in the views.

Friday evening after work: trusses are up!

Numbered for correct placing.

Saturday morning, getting ready for more sheeting.
Dean's here to help again.

At the end if a very wet day.

Sunday, tar paper.

Fearless husband sawing at the peak.

Putting up those freshly painted boards.

Don't they look good?

Dean here once again to help cover the roof.

Now we have a black box with white trim.

Next weekend... roofing.

Garden Shed IV

The IRS came through right on time.
Dale was ready to buy materials for framing the walls
and in Thursday's mail... refund check!

Friday morning early... off to the lumber store.
The sill plates were measured, drilled and put in place.

Assembly in his shop.
He loves the saw he found on Craig's List!

Brother Dean helps move the front wall into place.

Can you see a red door and 9-pane windows?
Window boxes and flower pots along the front?
A hummingbird feeder between the windows?
A comfy chair for basking in the morning sun?

Nailing down the back wall.

A brother's help is much appreciated.
(Lord knows Kim couldn't haul a wall!)

Three walls up!

It snowed again Saturday night and freezing rain iced things up,
but Dean came the next morning to help with the big end wall.

It just fit through the garage door.

Someone said it looked like a church window.
Hmmm... my new quiet place?
